One of the upsides of being a part-time stay-at-home-parent is watching children’s TV. Now, this could be an epic downside as there’s some right bollocks out there, but if you point the sprog in the right direction and keep tabs on what’s on, it’s generally okay. Thus far, the Boy is only aware of CBeebies and hopefully things’ll stay that way for a good while yet. I dread the inevitable appearance of impossibly-muscled grim-faced superheroes into his world, knowing that it’s going to happen one day, but in these pre-school days we still have some control over what stories/characters he’s aware of, aiming for the good stuff.
And there is a lot of good stuff out there for the bairns. Although CG animation dominates pre-school programming, much of it infuriatingly bad, there’s still some cracking exceptions. While my friend Paul has written some excellent reviews on CBeebies shows, I’d like to focus more on examples of quality animation to be found there that might otherwise fly under your radar (particularly if you’re not looking after a pre-schooler).
