With a keyword of ‘spider’ it didn’t take long before my idea sketches swung towards Tolkein’s Shelob. Tackling that scene from The Lord of the Rings seems like an act of boggling stupidity in a world where Alan Lee and Peter Jackson have already produced the definitive Shelob, but I just couldn’t shift the composition I had in my head. So I had a go.
Unfortunately, having a fab picture in your head doesn’t do much good if you don’t know how to get it out onto paper (or screen, in this case). I struggled over a few days trying to get it right, but slammed into the limitations of my drawing and colour skills. The finished result is probably as good as I can manage in the time I’ve had, but it’s a bit embarrassing when compared to other depictions of Shelob out there. Ah well, live and learn.
